CRITICAL ACCLAIM

  • "An exceptionally rich account of how attachment theory may be used to guide treatment methods."--Michael Rutter, MD, Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London, United Kingdom
  • "The author presents a clear summary of the basic tenets of attachment theory and its theoretical and empirical development....It is then possible for the reader to engage in the author's case illustrations of how knowledge of attachment dynamics can usefully influence a diverse range of psychotherapeutic work." -Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic
  • "I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the application of attachment theory for any client group. There is something for everyone here and much to provoke thought and further discussion." -Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry
  • "A useful, unpretentious, and eminently readable book. The theory, research, and case material addressed in it are crucial to consider for those interested in reflective, honest, and effective clinical practice." -Psychologist-Psychoanalyst Newsletter
  • "This second edition is an essential resource for clinicians, scholars, students, and all others seeking a fuller understanding of attachment disorders across the lifespan and how to treat them. Brisch wisely agrees with other leading authorities that ‘holding therapy’ is wrongheaded and irreconcilable with attachment theory. But how then should the serious emotional and behavioral troubles that typify the notion of attachment disorders be treated? For what is arguably the best and most comprehensive, research-based, and sensitive answer to date, read Brisch!"—Howard Steele, PhD, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Psychology, New School for Social Research
  • "Brisch's outstanding integration of John Bowlby's theory of attachment and analytic practice is fascinating to read....Highly recommended. Upper-division graduates and above."—Choice Reviews

Treating Attachment Disorders

From Theory to Therapy

Attachment theory and research have greatly enhanced our understanding of the role of parent-child relationships in the development of psychopathology. Yet until now, little has been written on how an attachment perspective can be used to actively inform psychotherapeutic practice. In this invaluable work, Karl Heinz Brisch presents an attachment-oriented framework for assessing and treating patients of all ages. Illuminated are the ways that early experiences of separation and loss can lead to a range of psychological, behavioral, and psychosomatic problems, and how these can be addressed in the context of a healing therapeutic relationship. Bridging a longstanding divide between the seminal work of John Bowlby and the concepts and methods of psychodynamic therapy, the book is richly illustrated with evocative clinical material.

Review: Probably the fullest account of how attachment theory may be used to guide treatment methods when dealing with attachment-related problems is that provided by Brisch (2002), based on Bowlby's (1988) suggestions, ..... Brisch emphasized the need for child therapists to provide secure, caring interactions that can facilitate the development of secure attachments; to interpret and foster emotional expression in relation to attachment issues; and to integrate these with similar concerns in relation to parents.

Review: I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the application of attachment theory for any client group. There is something for everyone here and much to provoke thought and further discussion.

Attachment - couples, sexuality, and children (in german language)

Securely attached - bound by love

The quality of the attachments that partners formed in their own childhoods have a profound effect not only on their own relationship but on the development of their children. Today we know that when children develop a secure attachment to their parents, this bond is a crucial protective factor for their further development. Securely attached children are better able to empathize with others, develop more sophisticated language skills, are more creative and joyous, and are able to develop more flexible solutions in difficult situations. How they structure their own couples relationships later on in life is influenced by their early attachments. However, numerous influences, including trauma, can interfere with the quality of the attachment developing between children and their parents -- and between partners in a relationship. This book demonstrates how an understanding of attachment theory may be used in the attachment-based counseling and treatment of couples, parents, and children of all ages. Among other things, it answers the following questions

  • What effect does attachment quality have on sexuality, the relationship between parents, and the development of their children?
  • What effect does separation or divorce have on the ability of children to form attachments?
  • How can parents work through the loss of a child?
  • What effect do traumatic experiences have on the development of destructive victimizer-victim bonds?
  • How can these be treated?

Attachment and early developmental disorders

Early developmental disorders may begin during pregnancy or in early infancy. They may have a critical effect on the development of the child, later manifesting as emotional and psychosomatic illnesses well into adulthood. Such disorders include those on the autistic spectrum, early anxiety and fear, depressive symptoms, and cognitive development difficulties with memory disorders. They are also associated with a decreased tolerance for stress, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), and immune deficiency disorders.  Here you will learn how early disorders develop and what preventive and psychotherapeutic modalities are available.
